What is the history of Dixie Hollins High School?
Dixie M. Hollins High School was named after the first Pinellas County superintendent of schools. The school was opened in 1959 with its first graduating class in 1960. Dixie began as the south county comprehensive vocational high school with more than 30 vocational, technical and business program offerings.

With the addition of Pinellas Park High School in the mid-70s and the opening of Osceola High School in 1981, Dixie’s enrollment stabilized to around 2,100 to 2,300 students during the 1980s. Since then, Dixie’s student population dropped and then stabilized again and today the school supports between 1,700 and 1,800 students yearly.

Traditionally referred to as “Dixie,” the St. Petersburg school now will be called Hollins High, though its official name will remain the same. It honors the district’s first superintendent, Dixie M. Hollins, who moved to Clearwater in 1908 and took over the system when it broke off from Hillsborough County schools in 1912.
