City Year is a proud member of AmeriCorps and is one of the largest AmeriCorps programs in the country. AmeriCorps is a federally funded network of national service programs that engages Americans in service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health and the environment.

City Year was founded in 1988 by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, then-roommates at Harvard Law School, who felt strongly that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing America’s most pressing issues. They built City Year with the conviction that one person can make a difference.

It’s a highly competitive application process, but because we select based on a holistic set of criteria and experiences, and provide intensive coaching throughout the program, we are able to admit talented and committed high school graduates alongside recent college graduates.
