Do you need a skimmer for carbon dosing?

Do you need a skimmer for carbon dosing?

In order for carbon dosing to work, you will need a good skimmer. The first reason why you need a skimmer when carbon dosing is that your skimmer will be removing the bacteria, which removes the nutrients they have consumed thus removing the nitrates and phosphates from your set-up.

Why does vodka in a reef tank?

When you dose vodka in your reef tank, you essentially feed helpful bacteria with the carbon calories that are in the vodka. By feeding those bacteria the carbon from the vodka, you are providing extra food which will cause their population to explode.

Does vodka dosing work in freshwater aquarium?

No. You need a good skimmer to carbon dose.

Is carbon dosing necessary?

Dosing helps boost established bio filtration, stimulating bacteria to colonize and consume the excess nutrients, nitrate and phosphate along with the liquid carbon. This important function of bacteria in the aquarium is the natural nitrogen cycle and will keep the tank from experiencing “New Tank Syndrome”.

What happens if you put vodka in a fish tank?

NO. Your fish will die before you notice any “drunk” behaviour. I have vodka-dosed my marine reef tank before, which was about 1,500 litres in size. The typical dosage was about 5-10ml for this size tank, and the purpose of putting this in was to see what effect this had on the level of dissolved nitrate in the water.

Is Nopox the same as vodka?

NOPOX is weaker, not stronger, than vodka. Here’s my DIY recipe that gets pretty close to NOPOX (at least the 2 main ingredients): “Mix one part vinegar to one half part vodka and one half part water. If you want to get even closer, add a little more vodka and a little less water.”

Can you overdose Microbacter clean?

Although a fish is only marginally like a human, fish can be convenient subjects for scientists who want to study the effects of alcohol. That’s because to get a fish tipsy, you don’t have to force it to drink anything. You only have to put a small concentration of alcohol into its tank.

What is NoPox?

There are multiple ways to reduce nitrates in saltwater aquariums, but NoPox (which is basically just methanol and vinegar) makes it very easy. Nothing good happens quickly in this hobby, and reducing nitrates is part of that.

How do you make NoPox?
