What causes Tori in your mouth?
Tori may develop due to genetic or environmental influences such as local irritation, grinding your teeth (bruxism), or misaligned teeth causing an uneven bite (malocclusion). In most cases tori are benign and do not require treatment.
What does a Torus Palatinus look like?
TORUS PALATINUS IS A bony prominence at the middle of the hard palate (1, 2). The size varies from barely discernible to very large, from flat to lobular.

It typically begins in puberty but may not become noticeable until middle age. As you age, the torus palatinus stops growing and in some cases, may even shrink, thanks to the body’s natural resorption of bone as we get older.

Tori palatinus can also become infected, as in our patient. It is not clear that drainage of the torus is beneficial or helps to speed up the recovery process. Instead, it can potentially introduce new pathogens into the area and cause more localized infection.
Can Tori hurt?
Mandibular tori can be a painful condition that causes your throat and jaw to hurt, your gums to get inflamed, and even your teeth to come loose. Typically, these bony growths appear inside your mouth on the lower jaw.
