Children with autism can frequently become overwhelmed or overstimulated by situations beyond their control. As caregivers, teachers and therapists we may not always know the cause of their discomfort so its important to have a toolbox of calming strategies to help kids calm down, refocus and get back on task.

The Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) was developed in 1999 to help researchers evaluate the effectiveness of various treatments for autistic children and adults and to help parents determine if their children benefit from a specific treatment.

People suffering from autistic burnout often feel: Increased frustration; More frequent emotional outbursts; Chronic fatigue or exhaustion.
How do you calm autistic sensory overload?
Give your child sensory toys, such as squeezy balls or buzzers, or make sure they always have their favorite blanket or stuffed animal. This can help create a sense of calm and security. Make time for physical exercise. Children with autism often spend several afternoons in therapy.

Parents may be at risk for the actions of their children, and parents may take action against caregivers for actions against their children.
How is ATEC scored?
Total scores on the ATEC range from 0-180 and are calculated by summing the scores of each subscale. In general, a higher score indicates a greater degree of impairment from symptoms. Responses to each question are assigned a numeric value and then added together.
