Working with Minky can be tricky sometimes because of the slippery quality of the fabric and the inherent stretch, but using spray basting helps to make this Minky-backed patchwork quilt easy. And this pattern uses a Minky self-binding to make finishing faster.

Fold half of your quilt top back on itself, right sides together and spray baste visible minky on the wrong side. don’t go crazy with the spray baste, it’s just not necessary – read my spray basting notes below for guidance. Unfold quilt top + place it back on spray basted minky, smoothing out wrinkles.

The first and easiest way to finish the minky blanket, is fold over those edges 1” towards the wrong side (white solid color) of the fabric and sew it down. You can use a zig zag stitch or a coverstitch machine. With the pile of the fabric, those stitches blend right in and you can hardly see them.

Flip the Minky-backed batting over and apply the spray basting to the other side of the batting. Lay the quilt top over the batting and smooth out any wrinkles. Be sure you have extra batting around all the edges. We’ll trim this later and use the excess for the binding.

Leave an 8 inch hole for turning, and make sure to backstitch on each side of the hole. Trim all four corners to reduce bulk. Turn the blanket right side out through the open hole. Luckily, since minky is slippery it’s easy to “slip” it through the hole. Clip the hole closed with the seam allowance inside and the folded edges lining up.

Now it’s time to trim the excess batting and Minky backing. Using a ruler and rotary cutter, trim the excess to 1″ from the quilt top on all sides. To create a self-binding, fold the 1″ margin of Minky and batting by about 3/8″ towards the quilt top. Then fold again so that the Minky overlaps the quilt top by about 3/8″.
