Do I need a 384K DAC?
Do I need a 384K DAC?
While there is absolutely no need for 384k, it would be nice if they advertised this thing as built… a 192KHz/32 bit DAC. No balanced outputs. Id rather see the front panel display/controls removed from the BOM, in lieu of software control, and spend the cash on some better op amps.

Is the cm6631a capable of 384kHz?
The chip is not capable of 384KHz according to the Cmedia data sheet. The CM6631A also drives the S/PDIF I/O and has I2S interfaces to the DAC itself, which is a AK4390 by AKM semiconductor. The AK4390 is 128x oversampling, at 30KHz to 216KHz – more evidence that this box will not support 384K.
Does 96kHz sound better than 48kHz?
Mark Waldrep does his work at 96kHz, but notes there is no conclusive support for audible differences compared to 48kHz data. From chapter 7 of his book Music And Audio: A User Guide to Better Sound.
