How long does ureter stent stay in?
For most patients, the stent will only stay in place for 5-7 days. In these cases, we often place the stent attached to a string which stays outside the body. The string can be gently pulled until the entire stent is removed. This is very quick and does not cause significant discomfort.
Can a cancerous ureter be replaced?
Surgery is often recommended to remove ureteral cancer. The extent of your surgery will depend on your situation. For very early-stage ureteral cancer, surgery may involve removing only a portion of the ureter.

Be aware of these common side effects from a ureteral stent:
- Discomfort and pain, usually experienced as a dull feeling in your sides and groin, and can get worse while you are urinating.
- Blood in your urine.
- A feeling of fullness and a constant need to urinate (urgency and frequency).

Due to an outside force putting pressure on the ureter by a tumor or other growth: Up to 3 months, and depending on if the growth will be removed, a stent can be left in place for years. However, stents must be changed on a regular basis of every 3-4 months.
Can I poop with a stent in?
You must keep from straining to have a bowel movement. A bowel movement every other day is reasonable. Use a mild laxative if needed and call if you are having problems. (Milk of Magnesia 2-3 Tablespoons, or 2 Dulcolax tablets for example).
