The dam contains over one million tonnes of masonry, it rises to 55 metres (180 ft) above the river and is almost 600 metres (2,000 ft) long. It was completed in 1936.

Can you swim in Scar House Reservoir? No, you can’t swim in Scar House. Reservoirs are really dangerous places and have lots of dangers hidden under the surface. We don’t allow anyone to swim in our reservoirs, even if you’re a great swimmer!

Walk No. A short walk (3 miles approximately) up to and around the reservoir, returning the same way, with magnificent panoramic views of Wensleydale. As well as a variety of birdlife, there is fishing and dinghy sailing to watch in season and wooden tables for a picnic en route.

What do I need to walk the Scar House and Angram?
If you fancy a tougher route, take on our Scar House and Angram walk. The route has a mixture of rough, uneven tracks, tarmac roads and moorland paths. Some sections can get muddy and boggy at wetter times of year and there are some steep climbs and lots of stiles. Sturdy boots, waterproofs and appropriate warm layers are recommended!

How do I get to Scar House from Nidderdale?
The route climbs steadily across the moor before descending to the shore of Scar House Reservoir (grid ref. SE064766). Turn right along the reservoir still following the Nidderdale Way and then bear left across the dam. Once across the dam, the route climbs away from the reservoir and then turns right onto Carle Fell Road (grid ref. SE065772).
