It was created by Pentax in 1975, and has since been used by all Pentax 35 mm and digital SLRs and also the MILC Pentax K-01.

Do Pentax lenses fit all Pentax cameras?
4 Answers. Yes, all Pentax DSLRs accept all K-mount lenses. This includes autofocusing (if applicable), focus confirmation, metering, IS, etc. The oldest two series, K and M series (database), do not have aperture contacts, and thus do not work with Av and Tv mode.
Can I use my old Pentax lenses on a digital DSLR?
Yes you can use those lenses. They will not be as convenient as the modern autofocus lenses but Pentax DSLRs are unique in that they have backwards capability with almost any Pentax mount lens ever made, including screw mount and medium format lenses (with adapters.)

Remarks: smc PENTAX-M and smc PENTAX (commonly know as “K”) lenses are manual focus and have no “A” setting on the aperture ring. Remarks: SMC Pentax-FA J lenses lack the aperture ring but otherwise work like an FA lens set permanently to the “A” position. Due to the lack of an aperture ring these lenses cannot be used on camera bodies where use of an aperture ring is mandatory (such as LX, ME, MX, K1000), but can be used on e.g. the ZX-5N in Program and Tv mode.
