Candidates are strongly encouraged to apply no later than the third year of their postdoctoral training to ensure awardees receive maximum benefit from both the K99 phase of the award, and to facilitate a timely transition to independence.
How does K99 R00 work?
The K99/R00 is a transitional grant that gives you 1-2 years of funding as a postdoc (K99 phase) and 3 years of funding as a PI (R00 phase), assuming you get a faculty job. It’s not a fellowship like the NRSA or a research grant like the R01. It’s super important to understand this as you prepare your application.
How long is a K99?
The K99/R00 award will provide up to 5 years of support in two phases. The initial (K99) phase will provide support for up to 2 years of mentored postdoctoral career development.

Applying for the K99 is tough, there are a lot of application components and people involved, and you need to develop a solid 5-year research and training plan.
Who can apply K99?
Eligibility for the NIH K99/R00 is defined as having no more than 4 years of postdoctoral research experience. (Please note: Temporary Extension of Eligibility for the NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award During the COVID-19 Pandemic – NOT-OD-20-158 and NOT-OD-21-106).
How do I write a K99 grant?

- Contact your institutional grants officer and look at other successful K99 grants.
What is a good score for K99?
They each come up with a single score from 1 to 9 (again, 1 is the best), those numbers are averaged, and that average is multiplied by 10 to get your impact score, ranging between 10 and 90. The successful K99 applications that I’ve seen received scores of 20 or lower.
