Some people will think that materia are really helpful, as in making lvl grinding faster, while others may retort that what little time you’ll gain is indeed short enough to not matter, and thus the materia used are wasted. IMO, keep those materia for the higher levels.

When you get to 80 you will get the OP levels back, but be warned, that if you start the game at OP8, your enemies will all be 88 or higher. Bullet sponges. Your (now) level 80 gear will still work, but it will be very under powered. Farming for gear will be needed.

At level 80, your xp will be 12,787,955. Your xp at 72 should be 9,520,932
What happens to my OP8 gear when I reach level 73?
Your old OP8 gear will still be usable in the meantime. When you reach 73 the old gear will say OP7, decreasing in number with each new level until you reach 80, then it will just be level 80 gear. When you get to 80 you will get the OP levels back, but be warned, that if you start the game at OP8, your enemies will all be 88 or higher.
