What are the side effects of the drug primidone?

Primidone may cause side effects. Call your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • excessive tiredness.
  • dizziness.
  • difficulty coordinating movements.
  • nausea.
  • vomiting.
  • loss of appetite.
  • double vision.
  • uncontrollable eye movements.

What is the drug primidone used for?

Primidone is used alone or in combination with other medicines, to control seizures (convulsions) in the treatment of epilepsy. This medicine is an anticonvulsant that works in the brain tissue to stop seizures. This medicine is available only with your doctor’s prescription.

Can you drink alcohol with primidone?

Alcohol interaction warning You shouldn’t drink alcohol while taking primidone. Taking this drug with alcohol can make some of the drug’s side effects worse. These include sleepiness or dizziness.

Is primidone a sedative?

Primidone is not efficient for the treatment of absences and myoclonic fits which may be sometimes aggravated. Due to its sedative effect it is recommended to initiate treatment of primidone with the lowest dose in the evening, and then with a stepwise approach (see section 4.2).

How do I get off primidone?

If you have been taking primidone regularly for several weeks, you should not suddenly stop taking it without first checking with your doctor. Your doctor may want you to gradually reduce the amount you are taking before stopping completely.

Does primidone help you sleep?

Primidone may cause some people to become dizzy, lightheaded, drowsy, or less alert than they are normally. Even if taken at bedtime, it may cause some people to feel drowsy or less alert on arising.

Primidone therapy can lead to increases in gamma glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) levels. Elevations in alkaline phosphatase levels were largely due to bone isoforms of the enzyme. There have been no convincing reports of hepatotoxicity due to primidone in humans and no reports of its association with acute liver failure.

Can primidone cause suicidal thoughts?

This medicine may cause some people to be agitated, irritable, or display other abnormal behaviors. It may also cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies or to become more depressed.
