Why do people use flatwound strings?

Why do people use flatwound strings?

Flatwound strings tend to have a darker tone that emphasizes the note fundamental, with limited harmonic content compared to roundwound strings. Another big advantage to many players is their smoother playing feel, which can be easier on the fingertips, not to mention your fingerboard and frets.

Why are flatwound strings so expensive?

Another thing to consider is the amount of processing that must go into the fabrication. This is why Flatwound or nylon tapewound strings will generally cost more than a typical roundwound string especially if they are hand wound (which is rare these days).

Can you slap with Flatwounds?

Yes, flatwound strings, on the bass, that’s cool! Some of them are even suitable for slap bass!

How can you tell if a string is flatwound?

The string will have a plain steel core wrapped tightly with a fine, round wire. The winding wire of a flatwound string has a square or ribbon-shaped cross-section. This is then wrapped around the core of the string in the same way as a roundwound string. It’s easy to tell the two apart!

Are flatwound strings easier on fingers?

Because of the unevenness of the surface, roundwound is going to feel like more pressure against your fingertips, while the flatwound will feel the most comfortable. This is likely to be very subtle in any case for you–by far, the diameter of the strings will make a more impressive difference.

Do flatwound strings have more tension?

Flatwound strings hold more string tension than roundwound strings. More string tension increases the amount of pressure the fingers need to use to push down the strings. In other words, your finger and hand muscles will need to work harder to produce the tone than when using roundwound strings.

How are flatwound strings made?

Electric guitar strings are either roundwound or flatwound. Roundwound strings are made by wrapping wire around a metal core, to a desired thickness (more on that later). Flatwound strings are constructed in a similar fashion, with a metal wrapped around a steel core, but that’s just about where the similarities end.

Can you put flatwound strings on an acoustic bass?

Using electric flatwound strings on an acoustic bass guitar is not recommended unless you will be playing with an amplifier, since acoustically, they will sound very dull. If you are changing the strings on your acoustic bass for the first time, you may want to stick with regular acoustic bass guitar strings.

Are flatwound strings more expensive?

Some players, usually rock players, do not like flatwounds at all because of their dark tone and lack of brightness and harmonics. The best flatwound guitar strings are also considerably more expensive than roundwound strings because they are more difficult to manufacture.
