What is WaniKani API?

Welcome to “WaniKani: The API”! You can use our API to access progress data for a user’s account and a ton general reference data for the subjects within WaniKani. This version is built around a RESTful structure, with consistent, resource-oriented URLs.

What is a leech WaniKani?

Basically, in the context of WaniKani, leeches are radicals, kanji, or vocab that just won’t stick in your memory through the usual SRS intervals no matter how long you try. Usually they have to be squashed through practicing them outside of WaniKani, either though Anki, userscripts, or some other method.

Is there a WaniKani app?

We currently do not have an Android app. There are a few third-party mobile apps made by our users that work pretty well. But if you have any questions or issues concerning apps, please contact their creators (not us!).

Does WaniKani teach stroke order?

WaniKani does not teach stroke order or handwriting. There are a few reasons for this: We teach kanji using radicals, so we don’t want you focusing too much on strokes.

Is WaniKani good for beginners?

Whilst there are alternatives, with WaniKani being able to take an absolute kanji beginner to an expert in little more than a year, it’s hard to argue with. And with the first three levels of kanji being free, there’s really no reason for a beginner not to give it a go.

How long does it take to finish WaniKani?

That depends on you. If you do your reviews on time and get most of them correct, it’s possible to get through all 60 levels in just over a year, or 368 days for one WaniKani user. That’s breakneck speed, however. Getting to level 60 in a year and a half or two years is a much more reasonable speed.

WaniKani Custom Immersive Dashboard by NekomoriKimiko: completely replaces the vanilla WaniKani dashboard with one entirely in Japanese purely for immersion (excepting system banners).

How to improve WaniKani’s lesson order?

Prioritize review items that are more overdue based on their SRS level and when the review became available. Turn burned items to gold. Filter your lessons by type, while maintaining WaniKani’s lesson order. If you give a wrong answer during reviews, it tries to guess which other WaniKani item you confused it with.
