Why do cars do a needle sweep?

Due to how the math works to initialize the stepper motors if the power is removed while pointing past about 200ยบ it can cause the needle to get stuck downwards. Doing a gauge test causes the stepper motor to sweep through several ranges which will snap the needle back upwards and allow it to reset.
