You have to go through the visitor centre to get to the ruins, so you have to pay the admission fee. A large area of the Urquhart Castle Visitor Centre is dedicated to a cafe and gift shop. At the end of the day, Urquhart Castle is just a ruin with not many intact parts to view.

Walked over to ticket office to have our tickets scanned only to be told no dogs allowed. I cannot understand the reason behind this. Urquhart Castle is an outdoor ruin. What harm is the dog going to do?? We were told by the staff 1 if you can go in, then swap over. I don’t think so. That’s not much of a family day out.
