Magnetic Island, known to its Indigenous inhabitants as Yunbenun, is an island 8 kilometres (5 mi) offshore from the city of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. This 52 km2 (20.1 sq mi) mountainous island in Cleveland Bay has effectively become a suburb of Townsville, with 2,335 permanent residents.

The island is beautiful, peaceful, with some gorgeous bays; but the beaches aren’t really suitable for sunbathing unless you take all your own towels and things. Fort walk is definitely worth it, as is going and feeding the wallabies at Geoffrey bay in the evening.

You need a car as Magnetic Island is quite extensive. You should be able to take it over and it’s only a short distance to the island. Stick to the sealed roads as hire companies usually limit you to these. Don’t assume you can take a hire car from Townsville over to Magnetic Island.

Is it safe to swim at Magnetic Island?
Magnetic Island is, in fact, great for swimming all year round. For beautiful swimming spots, check out the small and secluded cove of Rocky Bay, and for velvety golden sand head to Radical Bay, or Balding Bay. The mild and pleasant temperatures of the winter months are also when there are no stingers in the water.

Is there a nudist beach on Magnetic Island?
There are no official nudist beaches in Queensland but Balding is a well known unofficial nudist beach. It is probably the best i have been on having visited many countrys. Its a 20 minute walk up and down natural stone steps, or arrive by boat.
