What is solvent weld cement?

What is solvent weld cement?

The most permanent type of joint on a waste pipe is a solvent weld joint, made using solvent cement (SC250). It is a simple process that is used on PVC or ABS plastic pipes (not polypropylene) to actually weld the two pieces of plastic together, much the same as you would use solder to permanently join copper pipework.

Is solvent cement permanent?

Solvent cement is used for permanent lines with conventional fittings and chemically fuses the pipe to the fitting for a highly reliable joint that can withstand harsh chemicals, high temperatures, pressure and impact.

Is solvent weld better than push fit?

Both systems have their merits. Push Fit is fast and demountable, whereas as Solvent Weld is absolutely permanent. Our recommendation would be to use Solvent Weld in areas where there is any possibility of impact to the system, such as on a wall outside a house or in a public building.

How long does solvent cement last?

Defining shelf life

Product Shelf Life (from date of manufacture)
PVC Cements, Primers, and Cleaners 3 years
ABS Cements and Cleaners 3 years
CPVC Cements 2 years

Can I join solvent weld to push fit?

You will need compression fittings to join the two types of pipe. Solvent weld pipe is slightly too big to fit into a pushfit fitting.

Can I use solvent weld on push fit pipe?

Push fit pipe is made from a different material to solvent weld and as said is smaller. Solvent glue wont glue the push fit pipes at all.

What is the difference between solvent cement and solvent welding?

Solvent welding refers to a process in which a solvent or solvent blend with no dissolved polymer is used to create a joint between two thermoplastic parts. Solvent cementing refers to a process in which the solvent or solvent blend used to create the joint contains dissolved polymer.

What is solvent cementing?

The process of solvent cementing works on the same principle as solvent welding, the difference being that a polymer dissolved in solvent is used instead of a pure solvent. The polystyrene cement used in the construction of ‘Airfix’ models is an example of a solvent cement.

What is solsolvent welding and solvent cement?

Solvent welding and solvent cementing can produce welds with very little or no weld flashes, giving a better appearance than the welding techniques that use heat or friction, and, compared with frictional techniques, there is no risk of producing particulate debris.
