The 500 seems to rev a lot but is lighter and cheaper. The 750 is about 2 G more to buy but I want a bike that will keep her happy for a few years. OK, I’m known as a real NCX slagger – owned one did not like it – took a while for the feeling to grow on me. Just ended up hating that truncated engine. Does it have to be a Honda?

Its engine is supremely smooth, 4 cylinder-like, and it has enough low/midrange torque to make you forget it is just 471 cc. Both bikes cruise effortlessly at 80 mph (85 2-up on the CB was ridiculously serene for a 500) and both get great mileage (NC about 8 mpg better – 68 vs 60).
