AliÊ»i Drive extends 12.5 miles south from the intersection of Kuakini Highway, just north of Kailua Pier in Kailua Kona, to the intersection of Hawaii Belt Road in Captain Cook, Hawaii. Ali’i Drive used to be 5.9 miles long, ending at the Keauhou Shopping Center in Keauhou.

    Is ali’l drive open on the Big Island?

    We visited Ali’l Drive twice during our stay on the big island in March 2021. Several shops were closed – I’m not sure if it was permanently or temporarily and I presume COVID hit them hard. There were still enough stores open yet.

    Ali drive is a beautiful experience of the ocean and beaches, with the activity if walking, driving or cycling: its the main drag for shopping, beaches and exploring Kona.

    Should I stay at Hale Kona Kai or King Kam?

    We enjoyed our stay at Hale Kona Kai. It’s within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants on Ali’i Drive and you wouldn’t have to worry about parking. On the other hand, if money is no object, I agree that King Kam would be a lovely choice with its small protected beach area. When is the January 2019 street fair?

    Is Ali Ali’i Drive worth it?

    Ali’i Drive is not to be rushed. You can rent a bike or walk to experience it up close and personal with the variety of shoreline, homes and shops you will want to take your time, it is worth it to park and walk.
