Do I need carrier bearing drop?

Do I need carrier bearing drop?

Carrier bearings are not designed to be ‘dropped’. Personally, I wouldn’t drop it at all but I think the max you should drop it is by 1″. That MIGHT be enough to correct a minor vibration (minor degree difference).

What’s a carrier bearing drop kit?

Carrier bearing drop kits eliminate driveshaft vibrations in your lifted truck by correcting rear drive shaft angles. These steel carrier bearing drop kits are powder-coated for durability and include mounting hardware for a complete install.

How much does it cost to drop a carrier bearing?

In order to keep the angles roughly equal you’ll need to drop the carrier bearing roughly 1/2 the height of the blocks/spacers/shims in the rear lift.

How much play can a carrier bearing have?

Yes the center bearing will have about a 1/4 inch of play even if new.

Is my carrier bearing bad?

Spinning or Grinding Noise Under the Vehicle If you hear a spinning or grinding noise underneath the cabin of the vehicle, it could be a bad carrier bearing if the internal bearings are worn or if the carrier bearing or u-joints are binding and resisting as they turn.

How much play should be in a drive shaft?

@parzival some movement is definitely expected and 1/16th of an inch seems to be within those tolerances. Make sure that you do not get a vibration sound (thumping) while driving which would be a more common for that bearing.

How much rotational play should driveshaft have?

3/4″ of rotational play, or slack measured at the outside edge of the u-joint flange? I would say that is fairly normal, but if you are having noise from the rear end, I would be pulling the cover off and have a look inside. Remember, it could be coming from a worn wheel bearing too.

Can you grease a carrier bearing?

Grease as a lubricant. Grease is a common lubricant used in carrier bearing replacement and it must be used under normal temperature, performance and condition.

Is a drive shaft supposed to move?

A drive shaft is a rod-like component that transmits torque from your vehicle’s engine to the wheels. It’s important that the shaft assembly is flexible because drivetrain axles vibrate up and down and move laterally with braking and acceleration.

How much free play should a drive shaft have?

The free play is about 15 degrees. As jonheld says it is a bit less in the rear than the front.
