Oh Il-nam (Player 001) was a Game VIP all along. Instead he’s alive and lucid, though he’s lying in a hospital bed hooked up to an oxygen machine. He was even there when the Game was created, out of rich-people boredom. He says he joined because he wanted to feel true excitement before he died, beyond just spectating.

People who are either filthy rich or tragically poor have no fun in their life. If one has too much money, then all the spending becomes boring for them after a point of time. All his clients felt there was no joy in their lives. So they got together and designed the game to have fun.
