What should my camber be?
For a normal car you typically want to maintain a slight amount of negative camber (0.5 – 1°) to have a good balance of cornering grip, braking grip, and tire wear. On most vehicles it’s common to have slightly more negative camber (0.8 – 1.3°) in the rear to reduce the chances of oversteer (loss of grip in rear).
Do you adjust toe or camber first?
We learned that every time you adjust the toe (without turn plates), you must push the car backward and then forward roughly 10 feet. This loads the front tires to produce the most accurate readings. Toe is always set last because adjusting camber or caster moves the control arms, and that changes the toe.
Do you want positive or negative caster?
Increasing the amount of positive caster will increase steering effort and straight line tracking, as well as improve high speed stability and cornering effectiveness. Positive caster also increases tire lean when cornering (almost like having more negative camber) as the steering angle is increased.
How much negative camber is bad?
The maximum camber spec for the rear tires is no more than 2 degrees negative camber. Having too much rear camber can greatly negatively impact your car. First, having that much negative camber in your car will reduce grip in the back tires where straight line acceleration times will suffer because of tire spin.
How can I align my toe at home?
Assuming that the steering wheel is already centered, adjust the tie-rods on each side the same amount. Roll the vehicle back and forth several feet a few times to transfer your adjustment to the tires, then re-measure the toe. Repeat this step until the toe is within spec.
