What does JAK2 mean?
What does JAK2 mean?
The JAK2 enzyme is hard at work in the stem cells in our bone marrow. Also known as hematopoietic stem cells, these cells are responsible for creating new blood cells. Mutations found in people with MF cause the JAK2 enzyme to always stay turned on.
Can a JAK2 blood test come back negative?
The average person in the general population is going to test negative if they were to be given this blood test. There are times when a JAK2 blood test may be negative because the genetic mutation was missed. Medical providers which suspect an MPN may request a second blood test if the first one comes back as negative.
Does the Jak2 mutation increase the risk of clotting?
If a younger person has the JAK2 mutation it may indicate a higher risk for clotting, but it does not generally change the course of treatment. If you have the JAK2 mutation, especially if you are under the age of 60, talk with your hematologist about your possible increased risk of clots.
How many people with JAK2 have died?
From those 10,000+ people, they found only 15 that had the JAK2 mutation and determined that only 3 of the 15 died as a direct result of their disease well into their 70’s or 80’s. The remaining 12 died from other causes.
