Tate & Lyle PLC is a British-headquartered, global supplier of food and beverage ingredients to industrial markets. It was originally a sugar refining business, but from the 1970s it began to diversify, eventually divesting its sugar business in 2010.

Why is it no longer Tate and Lyle?
The company sold its sugar business (EU operations), including the Lyle’s Golden Syrup brand, to American Sugar Refining, Inc (ASR) and ended its long association with refined sugar production. The “Tate & Lyle Sugar” name was licensed to ASR to ensure the familiar “Tate & Lyle” brand remains on supermarket shelves.
How is Tate and Lyle sugar made?
In Belize, the sugar cane harvest takes place between December and June. The cane has to be processed within 48 hours or else the quality and the sucrose content will deteriorate. The juice is then clarified and crystalised into raw sugar, ready for shipping to our European refineries.
What happened to Tate and Lyle golden syrup?
In 1921, Lyle’s business merged with Tate, a sugar-refining firm founded by Sir Henry Tate in 1859, to become Tate & Lyle. In 2010, Tate & Lyle sold its sugar refining and golden syrup business to American Sugar Refining. This liquor is generally known as refiners return syrup.
