The bigger the light source is in relation to your subject, the less bright your subject’s eyes are going to be. If you want bright, clear eyes, a smaller beauty dish may be the way to go. It is also harder to control the light fall off (without a grid) as the bigger source will cast more light behind your subject.
Which size beauty dish is best?
As a general rule of thumb, smaller modifiers will produce a harsher light, and larger modifiers will produce a softer light. If you’re going to be shooting mainly tight head shots, then you may be able to get away with a 42cm beauty dish, however the 55cm and the 70cm will give you more coverage.
