What is the lumbosacral enlargement?
What is the lumbosacral enlargement?
The lumbar enlargement (or lumbosacral enlargement) is a widened area of the spinal cord that gives attachment to the nerves which supply the lower limbs.
Why is the lumbosacral enlargement present?
The lumbar enlargement of the spinal cord corresponds to the mild increase in cross sectional area of the cord from the T11 level to the conus medullaris. It is enlarged due to the presence of the spinal nerve anterior rami which contribute to the lumbar and sacral plexuses.
Why are the cervical and lumbosacral enlargements enlarged?
Two regions of the spinal cord are enlarged to accommodate the greater number of nerve cells and connections needed to process information related to the upper and lower limbs (see Figure 1.10B).
What do you call the structure just below the lumbar enlargement of the spine?
Sacrum – Part of the pelvis just above the coccyx (tailbone) and below the lumbar spine (lower back). Sacrum – Part of the pelvis just above the coccyx (tailbone) and below the lumbar spine (lower back).
Where do spinal cord enlargements occur?
The different cord regions can be visually distinguished from one another. Two enlargements of the spinal cord can be visualized: The cervical enlargement, which extends between C3 to T1; and the lumbar enlargements which extends between L1 to S2 (Figure 3.1).
Where are the cervical and lumbar enlargements?
Two enlargements of the spinal cord can be visualized: The cervical enlargement, which extends between C3 to T1; and the lumbar enlargements which extends between L1 to S2 (Figure 3.1).
What forms the lumbosacral plexus?
The lumbosacral plexus is formed by the anterior rami of the nerves (spinal segments T12–S4) to supply the lower limbs. The lumbosacral plexus can be divided into the lumbar plexus, which innervates the ventral upper half, and the sacral plexus, which mainly innervates the dorsal side.
In which of the following locations do enlargements of the spinal cord occur?
The cervical enlargement extends between vertebrae C3 – T1 and the lumbar enlargement extends between vertebrae L1 – S2.
