Monsurat. During his youth, E.A. McIlhenny and his friends had no fear of the alligators that inhabited the ponds on Avery Island – except for the one they called “ol’ Monsurat.” Monsurat was the largest alligator ever taken on the island, at eighteen feet three inches long.
How much does it cost to go to Avery Island?
I’m so glad that we planned it into our road trip as it is definitely worth a visit and at $5.50 each for the tour, it is not expensive either and a great bargain. If you love Tabasco, you have to go! I visited Avery Island in December 2017.

Is Avery Island worth visiting?
It was well worth the time to visit Avery Island. The Tobasco tour was interesting and there is a nice gift shop and a restaurant on site. The Jungle Gardens was a beautiful drive with several places to stop and explore. I don’t like hot sauce, but I certainly enjoyed my visit to Avery Island.
