You can have Serana continue to follow you once the quest line is over, and you will have 2 followers. You can even dismiss the second follower and pick up another instead while Serana continues to follow.
Does Serena count as a follower?
Serana is an ancient pure-blood vampire and the daughter of Lord Harkon and Valerica. She is known as one of the “Daughters of Coldharbour,” and because of this she is central to the main questline in Dawnguard. After being encountered, she can be recruited as a follower, unlocking a multitude of interactions.
Can you lose serana as a follower?
After you’ve finished the main questline, she’s still available as a follower and hangs out at Fort Dawnguard (if you sided with the Dawnguard) or Castle Volkihar (if you sided with the vampires), so you can dismiss her and pick her up again as you like.

If you side with the Dawnguard, you can convince Serana to cure her vampirism after her father’s death. This depends on selecting certain conversation options over the course of the questline. After Serana brings her scroll to Fort Dawnguard, you ask her “Have you always been a vampire?” while she is a follower.

If you allow Serana to turn you into a Vampire Lord, you can enter without being harmed. The non-vampiric alternative is to allow Serana to perform a partial soul trap ritual on you. This will weaken you inside the Soul Cairn, but you will remain human and alive.
Can serana turn you into a vampire multiple times?
If you do, Serana will transform you into a vampire as many times as you want. You can also contract the vampire disease and get it cured as many times as you want.
How long will serana follow you?
She will immediately leave, even if she is currently following you, saying that she needs to do this alone. For the next three days, she will stay with Falion, at which point, she will become human and return to Fort Dawnguard.
