Is a differential breather necessary?
Is a differential breather necessary?
Why are Diff Breathers important? Extended diff breathers are extremely important insurance for your 4WD if you drive through water. In essence, when you go through a puddle that is near or above diff height, you are dunking a hot differential into cold water.
What does a differential breather do?
A differential / axle breather serves the important purpose on a 4WD vehicle of venting the air pressure in your drivetrain assemblies such as differentials, gearbox and transfer case. This vacuum will close the one-way valve tightly shut causing air to be instantly drawn into the assembly through the axle/shaft seals.
Are diff breathers one way?
It’s always been a 2 way- that’s the function of breathers- let hot air vent when the diff heats up, allow air to flow back in when things cool down.
Why do differentials have vents?
As the axle increases in temperature, the air pressure inside the axle likewise increases. This, of course, leads to an oil leak as axle lubricant follows the air out through the seal. It is important to ensure that axle vents are clear and operating as they should.
What is differential breather kit?
The ARB Differential Breather Kit allows excess ventilation pressure to escape in your vehicle’s drivetrain assemblies such as the differentials, transmissions, and transfer cases. At times these assemblies can heat up allowing the air inside to expand which increases pressure.
What problem may be caused if the rear axle breather is blocked?
A clogged breather can absolutely cause a failed axle seal. As the differential heats up, there is a build-up of pressure and the pressure needs to go somewhere. If the breather isn’t working, the pressure will find the path of least resistance and that’s the oil seals on either ends of the axle housing.
What is a transmission breather?
Breather allows the transmission to breathe air when the air inside transmission expands or contracts due to heating and cooling of lubricating oil during vehicle running. Breather allows the hot air to escape and cool air to enter into the transmission to prevent overheating issue.
What does a rear differential vent do?
As the axle increases in temperature, the air pressure inside the axle likewise increases. To accommodate the increase in air pressure resulting from this heat, manufacturers add a vent tube to the top of the axle as means of releasing this pressurized air to the atmosphere.
What is a rear axle vent?
Axle Vents allow pressure inside the differential to equalize with the atmospheric pressure. All our Axle Vents are constructed of high quality materials for durability. Replacement required when tubes get clogged or deteriorate.
What is a gearbox breather?
