Is a Ursack worth it?
While an Ursack AllMitey has many advantages over a hard-sided bear canister, such as lighter weight, better packability, and reduced volume as you eat your food down, it’s still not universally approved for use in national and state parks that require visitors to use a bear canister.
Is Ursack IGBC approved?
Among bear-resistant food containers certified by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC), the Ursack S29. 3 AllWhite is easily my favorite.
Is Ursack waterproof?
The Ursack Minor is not waterproof and doubles in weight (from 5 oz to 10 oz) when it is soaked by rain. The Ursack Minor is not waterproof, items in the bag can become wet, and the fabric of the Ursack Minor can become waterlogged, which makes it less than appealing to store back in your pack the next day.
Is Ursack approved for JMT?
Yes, Ursacks are allowed along the rest of the JMT, with the exceptions of: YNP, the extended Rae Lakes region, and the area around Whitney.
Is Ursack approved for Yosemite?
Note that in Yosemite you can’t use an Ursack, a soft bag made of an extremely tough fabric impenetrable to prying bears that came out a few years ago. They’ve done well in tests with real bears, but most national parks still bar them from use because the results are not sufficiently conclusive.

Can I wash my Ursack? Yes! For the Major, Major XL, and Major 2XL: Machine wash in cool water and line dry. Be sure to tie a knot in the cord so it doesn’t come out during the process.
