Dakota County donated a 500-acre parcel of land in Apple Valley to the State of Minnesota in 1970. Construction for the “new zoo” began in 1974. Governor Wendell Anderson kicked off the Opening Ceremonies on May 22, 1978. A popular exhibit included two beluga whales: “Big Mouth” and “Little Girl.”
