Why is Houston not capital of Texas?
The provisional government of the Republic of Texas met at Washington-on-the-Brazos March 1, 1836. In October 1836, Columbia (today’s West Columbia) became the first capital of an elected government of the Republic of Texas. President Houston, on Dec. 15, 1836, ordered the seat of government removed to Houston.
Why was Texas capital moved from Houston to Austin?
Move to Austin Lamar wanted to encourage westward expansion in the state and pushed for the capital to move to the then town of Waterloo. Named in honor of the Father of Texas Stephen F. Austin, the town had enough open space to plan a street design which remains largely intact today.
