Is the gingival margin at the CEJ?

Is the gingival margin at the CEJ?

Gingival margin is significantly apical to the CEJ. When the gingival margin is significantly apical to the CEJ, a portion of the root surface is exposed in the mouth. This relationship is known as gingival recession.

What does coronal to the CEJ mean?

gingival margin
When the gingival margin is coronal to the CEJ, you subtract (from the probing depth) the distance from the CEJ to the gingival margin. If the gingival margin is apical to the CEJ, CAL is equal to the probing depth plus the distance from the CEJ to the gingival margin.

What determines where the CEJ is placed on the tooth?

In only 5–10% of teeth, there is a space between the enamel and the cementum at which the underlying dentin is exposed….

Cementoenamel junction
The CEJ is the more or less horizontal demarcation line that distinguishes the crown (A) of the tooth from root (B) of the tooth.

What is gingival margin?

The free gingival margin is the area located in between the sulcular epithelium and the epithelium of the oral cavity. This interface exists at the most coronal point of the gingiva. This is also referred to as the crest of the marginal gingiva.

How do you measure gingival recession?

Gingival recession is measured clinically as the distance from the cemento-enamel junction to the depth of the free gingival margin using the millimeter markings on the periodontal probe and reflects exposure of the root cementum [7, 8].

How is attached gingiva calculated?

Place your probe on the outside of the tissue and measure from the gingival margin to the mucogingival junction. Now measure the sulcus or pocket depth (probing depth). Subtract the probing depth from the outside measurement of the gingiva, and you will have the width of attached gingiva.

How is Cementoenamel Junction detected?

VARIOUS METHODS OF CEJ LOCATION

  1. Visual.
  2. Tactile. By straight explorer. By periodontal probe; examiner feels for the cervical line with the tip of the probe[24]
  3. Radiographic. Intraoral periapical (IOPA) radiograph. Bite wings. RVG.[25]

Is gingival margin the same as recession?

Gingival recession, also known as receding gums, is the exposure in the roots of the teeth caused by a loss of gum tissue and/or retraction of the gingival margin from the crown of the teeth.

How much attached gingiva is essential?

Lang and Loe5 advocated a minimum of 2 mm of gingiva (1 mm free gingiva and 1 mm attached gingiva) to maintain gingival health, as teeth with less than 2 mm exhibited clinical signs of inflammation, even in the presence of good oral hygiene.
