Along the River Dane, at the meeting point of three counties (Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire) is a charming set of waterfalls called Three Shires Head. As you can probably guess, the name comes from the three counties: Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire.
Where do you park to walk to Three Shires Head?

- Park at The Roaches car park at Gradbach, managed by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust (grid ref SJ 99852, postcode SK17 0SU).
- Walk out of the car park to join the quiet road and turn left.
- Walk diagonally right across the field, keeping the River Dane on your left.
What happened to the three shires stone?
In 1997, the stone was smashed into four pieces, probably as the result of a motor accident. It was restored in 1998 by stonemason Gordon Greaves of Troutbeck Bridge. The unveiling ceremony of the restored monument took place on 27 April 1998.
