After Neferneferuaten’s short rule of two or three years, according to Allen, Smenkhkare became pharaoh. Under this theory, both pharaohs succeeded Akhenaten: Neferneferuaten as the chosen successor and Smenkhkare as a rival with the same prenomen, perhaps to challenge Akhenaten’s unacceptable choice.

If so, he is a candidate for father of the prince Tutankhaten, who would eventually become Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
