What is a laminaria procedure?

What is a laminaria procedure?

A laminaria tent is a small rod of dehydrated seaweed that when inserted in the cervix, rehydrates, absorbing the water from the surrounding tissue in the woman’s body. Laminaria expands up to ten times its original size, slowly opening the cervix, and when removed, creates easier access to the uterus.

How does laminaria dilate the cervix?

A laminaria stick is a dried bundle of laminaria that’s been compressed into a stick. When inserted into the vagina, a laminaria stick absorbs the moisture and expands. This gently opens (dilates) the cervix. Laminaria can also be taken as an oral supplement.

What does laminaria do for cervical ripening?

Cervical ripening Laminaria dilators have been used to dilate the cervix and to induce labor in abortions. When inserted into the cervix, laminaria dilators absorb surrounding moisture and gradually swell to a diameter of approximately one-half inch.

What is the life cycle of laminaria?
