What is a Ureteroneocystostomy?
What is a Ureteroneocystostomy?
Ureteroneocystostomy (UNC) refers to reimplantation of the ureter into the bladder. In the adult population, ureteroneocystostomy is primarily used for disease or trauma involving the lower third portion of the ureter that results in obstruction or fistula.
What is ureteral reimplant?
The ureters are the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Ureteral reimplantation is surgery to change the position of these tubes where they enter the bladder wall.
How is ureteral reimplantation done?
An incision is made in your child’s lower abdomen (belly), just above the pubic bone. The end of the ureter and some muscle near it are detached from the bladder. The doctor will decide where in the bladder to reimplant the ureter. A tunnel is then created for the ureter to be placed inside.
Is Ureteroneocystostomy an anastomosis?
Ureteroneocystostomy anastomosis may become occluded by a hematoma at the site of the submucosal tunnel in the bladder or by a technically unsatisfactory anastomosis. An adynamic ureter or edema at the orifice in the bladder can also cause temporary partial obstruction.
Can a damaged ureter be fixed?
A pelvic ureteral injury should be repaired with ureteral reimplantation with/without psoas hitch and/or Boari flap. Abdominal ureter injury can be repaired by UU, TUU, or ureteral reimplantation.
How long is recovery from ureteral reimplantation surgery?
This is usually in about 1 to 2 weeks. Do not allow your child to do strenuous activity for about 4 to 6 weeks, or until your doctor says it is okay. This includes riding bikes, playing running games, wrestling, and taking part in gym class.
What happens to kidney when ureter is blocked?
A ureteral obstruction is a blockage in one or both of the tubes (ureters) that carry urine from your kidneys to your bladder. Ureteral obstruction can be curable. However, if it’s not treated, symptoms can quickly move from mild — pain, fever and infection — to severe — loss of kidney function, sepsis and death.
What is a psoas hitch?
A psoas hitch is a method of ureteric re-implantation following an injury to the ureter. The reconstruction is indicated when the distal ureter is injured or resected, and the remaining portion of ureter cannot reach the bladder for ureteral reimplantation.
