The Auroral Electrojet Index, AE, is designed to provide a global, quantitative measure of auroral zone magnetic activity produced by enhanced Ionospheric currents flowing below and within the auroral oval.
What is auroral Electrojet?
The auroral electrojets are two broad sheets of electric current that flow from noon toward midnight in the northern and southern auroral ovals. The dawn-side current flows westward, creating a decrease in the magnetic field on the surface.

To describe the geomagnetic disturbances at mid-latitudes in terms of longitudinally asymmetric (ASY) and symmetric (SYM) disturbances for both H and D components respectively parallel and perpendicular to the dipole axis. SYM-H is essentially the same as the Dst index with a different time resolution.
