What is ambulatory ECMO?

What is ambulatory ECMO?

Ambulatory ECMO programs of this nature have been developed in an attempt to provide rehabilitation, physical therapy, and minimization of sedation prior to lung transplantation to improve both surgical and posttransplant outcomes.

What does ECMO do for patients?

Essentially, ECMO helps these patients by acting as their heart and lungs. The machine is used when all other medical options have been exhausted for patients whose lungs can’t provide enough oxygen to their body or rid themselves of carbon dioxide.

What is cannulation for ECMO?

Both types of ECMO involve inserting two cannulas—one for draining the blood from venous system (SVC/IVC) to ECMO circuit, the other one—for returning the oxygenated blood either to RA (VV) or to arterial system (VA).

Can patients on ECMO walk?

Obviously not every patient on ECMO should be walking and talking. But, there is certainly a subset of ECMO patients for whom these activities make a lot of sense and provide a lot of benefit. AND can be done safely with proper planning, training, and execution as a health care team.

Can a person walk on ECMO?

Ambulatory ECMO makes it possible for the patient to exercise and walk, and provides the best outcome for high risk patients in severe respiratory failure.

Where are ECMO lines placed?

The tubes are placed in large veins and arteries in the legs, neck or chest. The procedure by which a healthcare provider places these tubes in a patient is called cannulation. The ECMO machine pumps blood from the patient’s body to an artificial lung (oxygenator) that adds oxygen to it and removes carbon dioxide.

Is there an age limit for ECMO?

The recently published ECMO to Rescue Lung Injury in Severe ARDS (EOLIA) trial only excludes those under the age of 18 years but does not specifically have an upper age limit. A number of predictive scoring models have been created for patients treated with VV ECMO for respiratory failure.

Does ECMO hurt?

ECMO support is generally not painful. Your child will receive pain medications and sedatives during ECMO, and in some cases may require complete muscle relaxation with medications known as paralytics.
