What is AmeriCorps City Year?
As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you’ll be receiving training and serving students and schools full-time for 11 months. On average, you’ll serve all day Monday through Friday with occasional late nights and weekends.

City Year was founded in 1988 by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, then-roommates at Harvard Law School, who felt strongly that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing America’s most pressing issues. They built City Year with the conviction that one person can make a difference.
What is the city year mission?
City Year’s mission is to build democracy through citizen service, civic leadership and social entrepreneurship. It is through service that we can demonstrate the power and idealism of young people, engage citizens to benefit the common good, and develop young leaders of the next generation.
Do you get paid with AmeriCorps?
While it’s true that AmeriCorps members are considered volunteers and do not receive a salary, they do receive a monthly living stipend to help cover rent, groceries, gas, and other expenses.
How does City Year make money?
City Year provides a modest living stipend to all AmeriCorps members for their term of service. The stipend amounts vary and are driven by the cost of living in each location where our AmeriCorps members serve. Our goal is to make service financially feasible for all.

What criteria are used in the selection process? The role of an AmeriCorps member is tremendously rewarding but far from easy, which is why we’re selective with our application process. City Year AmeriCorps members are as diverse a group as the communities where they serve.
