What is D-star communication?

D-STAR (Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio) is a radio system which offers digital voice and data communication. Repeater sites are pre-dominantly connected over the Internet and form a wide area amateur radio network as a result that can span states, countries, continents or the entire world.

Getting set up with D-STAR D-STAR Gateways enable users to connect from a local D-STAR repeater, equipped with a D-STAR Gateway, to any other Gateway equipped D-STAR repeater. Once an Amateur is registered with a repeater gateway, it can connect to D-STAR users beyond the local repeaters.

Module D = Digital data. Gateways are computer servers connected to repeaters that run software that enables them to act as “gateways” to the internet, enabling the repeaters to link to other remote repeaters and reflectors. They also enable hotspots to link to the repeaters via the internet.
