What is Desirox?

Desirox 500 Tablet is a medicine used in the treatment of chronic iron overload caused by frequent blood transfusion. It helps remove the excess iron from the body and reduce the risk of it causing organ damage.

How do you use deferasirox?

Do not chew or crush the Exjade dispersible tablet, and do not swallow it whole. Place the tablet into a glass of apple juice, orange juice, or water and allow the tablet to disperse in the liquid. The tablet will not dissolve completely. Drink this mixture right away.

How do you take deferasirox?

It should be taken on an empty stomach once a day, at least 30 minutes before eating, The tablets and granules can also be taken with a light meal such as a whole wheat English muffin with jelly and skim milk, or a small turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread. Take deferasirox at around the same time every day.

Is there generic deferasirox?

Deferasirox is also available as brand Jadenu 180 mg tablets, brand Jadenu 90 mg, 180 mg and 360 mg sprinkle granules, and as generic 125 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg tablets for oral suspension.

DESIROX ( deferasirox) is indicated for the treatment of chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions (transfusional hemosiderosis) in patients 2 years of age and older. This indication is based on a reduction of liver iron concentrations and serum ferritin levels.

What is the best way to take deferasirox?

Take deferasirox once daily on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before food, preferably at the same time each day. Completely disperse tablets by stirring in water, orange juice, or apple juice until a fine suspension is obtained. Disperse doses of less than1 g in 3.5 ounces of liquid and doses of 1 g or greater in 7.0 ounces of liquid.

Does deferasirox cause hepatic toxicity?

Deferasirox can cause hepatic injury, fatal in some patients. In Study 1, 4 patients discontinued deferasirox because of hepatic toxicity (drug-induced hepatitis in 2 patients and increased serum transaminases in 2 additional patients). Hepatic toxicity appears to be more common in patients greater than 55 years of age.

What are the side effects of deferasirox in children?

In pediatric patients, interrupt Deferasirox during acute illnesses which can cause volume depletion, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or prolonged decreased oral intake, and monitor renal function more frequently. Promptly correct fluid deficits to prevent renal injury.
