What is EIFS in construction?
Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) is an exterior wall cladding that utilizes rigid insulation boards on the exterior of the wall sheathing with a plaster appearance exterior skin. EIFS in its current basic form was developed in West Germany in the 1960s and introduced in the United States in 1969 by Dryvit.
How are EIFS installed?
EIFS installation EIFS are typically attached to the outside face of exterior walls with an adhesive (cementitious or acrylic based) or mechanical fasteners. Adhesives are commonly used to attach EIFS to gypsum board, cement board, or concrete substrates.
Can EIFS be repaired?
The damage to the EIFS system may be the result of intentional vandalism, unintentional damage resulting from traffic, landscaping activities etc, or weather phenomenon such as blowing debris, heavy hail etc. Holes or other damage is easily repaired with Terraco Styrobond HB DP – less than 50 mm in diameter.
Can you paint EIFS?
Unlike wood, stucco and other siding materials, EIFS rarely need painting. Most EIFS systems are specifically formulated with 100% acrylic binder, which gives EIFS superior resistance to fading, chalking and yellowing. As a result, the systems tend to maintain their original appearance over time.
Is Dryvit a stucco?
The name Dryvit is the name of the manufacturer who produces different stucco systems. The product called Dryvit is a type of synthetic stucco that is applied as a final coat to another stucco system, such as EIFS, to keep water from penetrating the other layers of the wall.
Does EIFS have one coat stucco?
The three wall systems that are widely accepted today are: traditional three- coat stucco; one coat fiber reinforced stucco (FRS); and exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS).
How often should EIFS be recoated?
You cannot paint Stucco, EIFS or Dryvit. The best thing is your stucco will look new again and should last 12- 15 years before needing to be recoated, while protecting your stucco/EIFS.
