An IRCd, short for Internet Relay Chat daemon, is server software that implements the IRC protocol, enabling people to talk to each other via the Internet (exchanging textual messages in real time). The server listens to connections from IRC clients on a set of TCP ports.
Is IRC chat still around?
IRC is an internet protocol for real-time communication online. Although many fancier chat applications have appeared since it emerged way back in the 1980s, IRC is still going strong, and provides a viable alternative. If you want more information on IRC, IRCHelp.org is a good resource.
Does anyone use mIRC anymore?
Yes and no. Yes, people still use IRC; yes, people still use IRC servers, yes, people probably still use mIRC. No, because mIRC isn’t a server. Asking, “do people still use IRC servers such as mIRC” is like asking if someone uses a website such as Internet Explorer.
