What is myopia control?

Myopia control or myopia management is the area of children’s eye care dedicated to slowing down childhood myopia progression. Myopia in children may also be called being short-sighted or near-sighted.

How do eye drops work to treat myopia?

They are used to widen your pupils during an eye exam. When given to children in small amounts for 2 to 3 years, the drops may slow the progression of myopia. Doctors do not know exactly how it works, but they think these drops may keep the eye from lengthening too much. Myopia worsens as the eye grows longer.

Can peripheral defocus contact lenses help myopia?

Blurring side vision is thought to slow eye growth and limit myopia. Peripheral defocus contact lenses might not work in all cases. However, these lenses seem to help certain children, including those whose parents are nearsighted and whose own myopia is getting worse.

What happens if a 10 year old is myopic?

However if they grow too quickly or don’t stop at age 10-12, then a child becomes myopic. This excessive growth of the eye stretches the retina – the light sensitive layer lining the back of the eye – and the stretching increases risk of eye diseases and vision impairment occurring across your child’s lifetime.
