What is sheep color?
Wild sheep are largely variations of brown hues, and variation within species is extremely limited. Colors of domestic sheep range from pure white to dark chocolate brown, and even spotted or piebald.
What does dye on sheep mean?

Why are sheep different Colours?
Why do sheep have patches of color painted on their wool? Farmers “paint” their sheep for identification. When mating, the ram mounts the ewe and a bit of dye is deposited on the ewe’s upper back. This way, the farmer knows which ewes have been impregnated and moves them on to another field away from the ram.

They are smit marks and farmers have been using them for hundreds of years to identify who sheep belong to. A daub of paint – perhaps two marks of red or one of black – nearer the haunch or the shoulder. From these a farmer would know which were his sheep and which belonged to his neighbour.

Ear marking is used to identify each lamb in the flock and tail-docking is usually carried out to prevent blowfly strike. This causes great distress and pain for the lamb. Lamb meat is more expensive because lambs live a good quality of life before slaughter, produce less meat per animal, and are typically sold to butchers whole. Compared to other meats, lamb requires specialized care and handling, resulting in higher prices at the butcher shop.

The meat of sheep 6 to 10 weeks old is usually sold as baby lamb, and spring lamb is from sheep of age five to six months. The mild flavour of lamb is preferred in most Western countries, while the stronger flavour of mutton is considered desirable in many Middle and Far Eastern countries.
