Waterton was the site of western Canada’s first producing oil well, the second in all of Canada. Long before, the Kootenai had discovered the presence and medicinal value of oil seepages along Cameron Creek. The first oilrig drilled in 1902 but was closed down by 1906. Other attempts were made until the 1930s.
Why was Waterton National Park created?
In 1932, the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park was created to commemorate the peace, goodwill and cooperation between Canada and the U.S.A. The Peace Park is now both a symbol and a working example of positive cooperation in heritage management across boundaries.

There’s only a few dozen people who are year-round residents in the town — many of whom are Parks Canada employees — but there are approximately 160 cottages in Waterton that are privately owned. There’s also a handful of business owners who own and operate the town’s hotels, motels, restaurants and shops.
