What is trimethylamine used for?
Trimethylamine is a colorless gas or liquid below 37oF (3oC), with a strong fishy odor. It is used as a warning (smell) agent in natural gas, as an insect attractant, and in chemical manufacturing.
Is trimethylammonium chloride A salt?
Trimethylamine hydrochloride is a hydrochloride salt formed by reaction of equimolar amounts of trimethylamine and hydrogen chloride. It contains a trimethylammonium.

What are the products of the reaction between triethylamine and HCL?
Triethylamine is added to neutralize the hydrochloric acid that is generated during the reaction, forming triethylammonium chloride.
Why is TMAO bad?
The atherogenic effect of TMAO is attributed to alterations in cholesterol and bile acid metabolism, activation of inflammatory pathways and promotion foam cell formation. TMAO levels increase with decreasing levels of kidney function and is associated with mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease.
Is trimethylammonium chloride an acid or base?
e.g., Weak-acid problem: find the pH of 0.050 M trimethylammonium chloride (i.e., (CH3)3NH+). This ion is a weak acid, with a conjugate base of trimethylamine. The Cl- ions have no acidic or basic properties, and are ignored.
How many sigma bonds are in Tetra methyl ammonium chloride?
Here there are five valence electrons resulting in a value δv=5 and four sigma bonds leading to δ=4.
Why is trimethylamine a gas?
Trimethylamine is a product of decomposition of plants and animals. It is the substance mainly responsible for the fishy odor often associated with fouling fish, bacterial vagina infections, and bad breath….

How do you get rid of triethylamine hydrochloride?
If your product is soluble in hexane/heptane, the easiest way is to evaporate your residue with hexane/heptane, on raota-evaporator. All your NEt3HCl salt will evaporate with solvent. Repeat this untill you don’t see any white colored salt in your rota. Finally, dissolve in heptane/hexane and filter through celite.
Is TMAO bad for the heart?
In one of those studies, researchers found that people with higher levels of TMAO in their blood may have more than twice the risk of heart attack, stroke, or other serious cardiovascular problems, compared with people who have lower levels.
